Two Event Victories Highlight Valpo Showing at Findlay

Philip Lohrmann (Battle Ground, Wash./Battle Ground [Clark C.C.]) took top honors in the pole vault, while Jim Turchyn (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) captured the 3,000m run as Valparaiso competed Friday and Saturday at the Findlay Classic in Findlay, Ohio.

Lohrmann registered a height of 13’11 ¼” for the victory in the pole vault, just two inches shy of his career-best mark.  Turchyn outpaced a field of 38 other runners for the victory in the 3,000m run, breaking the tape in 8:47.17.  It was one of two top-five finishes for Turchyn in the meet, as he also placed fourth in the one mile run with a time of 4:19.81.

Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) registered two top-ten finishes for the Crusaders at Findlay as well.  Honig came home as the runner-up in the one mile run, crossing the line in 4:19.36, and placed ninth in the 3,000m run with a time of 9:11.38.  Freshman Joel Hartenberger (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) also had a solid showing in the 3,000m run, completing the race in 9:12.05, good for 11th place.  Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) finished tenth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.89 seconds.

On the infield, freshman Jarrett Mickens (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 42’9 ½”, the third time in as many meets he has registered a top-10 finish in the event.  Fellow newcomer Steve Schubert (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) finished fifth in the same event with a mark of 40’11 ¾”.  Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) recorded a throw of 58’10” in the weight throw for a fifth-place finish of his own.

Valparaiso returns to the track in two weeks when the Crusaders travel to Greencastle, Ind. to take part in the DePauw Invitational on Saturday, February 9.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. CST.
