Competing in their final tune-up for the Horizon League Championships, four different athletes recorded top-ten finishes as the Valparaiso men’s track and field team took to the track Saturday at the Stan Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind.
Sophomore Steve Schubert (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) posted the top individual finish by a Crusader on Saturday, finishing in fifth place in the triple jump with a new personal best of 44’2 ¾”, less than four seconds off of Valpo’s all-time top-five chart in the event. Freshman Vinnie Liuzzo (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) also recorded a top-ten in the infield, placing seventh in the javelin throw with a toss of 167’7”, also a new personal best.
The Crusaders also posted a pair of top-tens on the track as well. Freshman Jordan Piaskowy (Crete, Ill./Illiana Christian) ran to a seventh-place showing in the 3,000m steeplechase, crossing the line in 10:13.53. Senior Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) came home in tenth place in the 110m hurdles with a season-best time of 15.41 seconds.
Valparaiso moves on to the Horizon League Outdoor Championships next weekend in Lisle, Ill. The three-day meet kicks off Friday, May 1 at 2 p.m.
