Valpo Scores Road Victory over UMKC

Three straight goals in the middle of the match propelled Valparaiso to a 3-2 victory over UMKC on Friday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo.

The Kangaroos struck first as Mike Rosenthal took a cross at the far post and beat Jeff Oleck (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) at the 6:20 mark.

Valpo then went on a scoring spree. Billy Wanecke (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Marian H.S.) tied the match at the 9:20 mark with a one-on-one challenge in the box that beat keeper Beau Williams. Ben Olson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon H.S.) then took a high lob from Jon Flugstad (San Antonio, Texas) off a restart and headed the ball to the back of the net to give Valpo a 2-1 lead at halftime. For Flugstad, it was his second assist of the night.

Mark Korba (Portage, Ind./Portage H.S.) put the Crusaders up 3-1 scoring from 20 yards out at the 73:01 mark for Valpo's final tally.

M.J. Serota added a late goal for UMKC rebounding a Dan Hilson shot in the box to close within one.

UMKC (4-6-1, 1-1 Mid-Con) outshot Valpo 20-19 and held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. Oleck made five saves for the Brown and Gold, while Williams made five for the Kangaroos. Todd Dohlman replaced Williams at the 55:47 mark and made three more for UMKC.

Valpo (4-7-1, 2-1) will travel to Loyola (Ill.) on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match with the Ramblers.
