Valparaiso University senior thrower Jacob Smutz traveled to the Carthage Final Qualifier in Kenosha, Wis. on Friday, taking first place in the weight throw with the second-best effort of his career. The performance sets Smutz up for next week’s USATF Indoor National Track & Field Championships.
Smutz wasted little time in posting his event-winning mark, unleashing a toss of 66’2 ½” on his first effort Friday – enough to win the event by over 11 feet. The throw was the second-best mark of his career, trailing only Smutz’s toss of 67’2 ¾” at the Windy City Rumble earlier this season.
Smutz is currently slated to compete at next week’s USATF Indoor National Track & Field Championships in Portland, Oregon. The senior is ranked 14th among the 16-man field in the weight throw for the national championship meet. The weight throw will open the national championships on Friday, Mar. 11 at 1:30 p.m. CT.
