Valpo Hosts Austin Peay In Season Finale; Honors 7 Seniors

THE COACHES: Valparaiso is guided by Tom Horne, who is 54-90-1 in his 14th season at Valpo. Austin Peay is led by Bill Schmitz, who is 38-65 in his 11th season.

LAST WEEK: Valpo defeated Lindenwood 27-6 last Saturday in Valparaiso. Austin Peay lost to Davidson 49-28 last Saturday in Clarksville, Tenn.

After earning its first victory of the season, Valpo (1-9) hosts Austin Peay (6-5) on Saturday at noon on Senior Day in the season finale. The following seven Crusader seniors will be playing their final collegiate game on Saturday:

Tom Byrne, offensive line, Evergreen Park, Ill./St. Rita - A four-year starter on the offensive line, Byrne will start his Valpo-record 44th consecutive game on Saturday. A First Team All-Pioneer Football League selection in 2001, he started at left guard for three seasons before playing center and right guard this season. As a sophomore, Byrne played a key role in helping Valpo capture the 2000 PFL Championship.

Adam DaSilva, linebacker, Libertyville, Ill./HS - A three-year letterwinner, DaSilva has been a major part of Valpo's linebacker rotation this season. As an outside linebacker, DaSilva has made 24 tackles, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery, while forcing one fumble in 2002. In 2001, he was named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll.

Bryan Hollermeier, running back, Denver, Colo./Mullen - A fifth-year senior, Hollermeier leads the Crusaders in rushing this season with 247 yards and three touchdowns. Last Saturday, he helped the Crusaders to a win over Lindenwood by rushing for a career-high 102 yards on 22 carries. Hollermeier ranks 5th in the PFL and 38th among all NCAA I-AA players in punt returns (10.8 ypr.). A three-year letterwinner, he returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown against St. Francis and caught the game-winning 30-yard touchdown against Austin Peay during the 2000 season.

Adam Hudak, kicker, Lowell, Ind./HS - Valpo's starting kicker the last three seasons, Hudak led the team in scoring as a sophomore and junior, and is tied for the team lead (48) this season. Currently with 138 career points, he stands 8th on Valpo's all-time scoring list. This season, Hudak has made eight of 11 field goal attempts, including a career-long 45-yarder. Over his career, he has converted 26 field goals and 60 extra points. As a sophomore, Hudak was selected First Team Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-American. In 2001, he was named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll.

Vince LoCoco, defensive line, Glendale, Wis./Nicolet - A key part of Valpo's defensive line rotation this season, LoCoco has made 13 tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. A defensive tackle, LoCoco is a two-year letterwinner.

Art Niederkohr, fullback, Huntsville, Ohio/HS - Valpo's starting fullback this season, Niederkohr has rushed for 78 yards. Niederkohr has earned two letters after transferring from Mount Union College in 2000.

Greg Sommersberger, tight end, Sheboygan, Wis./South - Sommersberger had a very productive senior campaign prior to suffering a season-ending injury against Butler. In eight games this season, Sommersberger made 24 receptions for 362 yards and two touchdowns. Against Drake, he caught a career-high seven passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. A week earlier, Sommersberger made six catches for a career-high 119 yards and a touchdown against Saint Joseph's. In 2001, he was named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll.

"Valparaiso University Football", head coach Tom Horne's TV Show, airs Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. on Channel 43 in Valpo, Thursdays at 6 p.m. on Channel 44 in Portage and at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 3 in Michigan City and Merrillville. This week's player guest is sophomore defensive end Ross Connor.

A LOOK AT AUSTIN PEAY:

The Governors (6-5) began the season by winning five of their first eight games, including wins over Butler and Jacksonville. Coach Bill Schmitz' squad can boast the NCAA I-AA's leading rusher Jay Bailey. A 6'0", 205-pound senior, Bailey has rushed for 1,569 yards (142.6 ypg.) and 16 touchdowns on 292 carries. A versatile player, Bailey is second in the PFL in kickoff returns (25.4 ypr.) and has made 16 receptions for 83 yards. Quarterback Matt Schmitz has completed 60 of 122 passes for 650 yards and three touchdowns. Pat Curran (28 rec., 323 yards, 2 TDs) and Trae Willis (26 rec., 463 yards, 2 TDs) are the top targets. Defensively, APSU is led by end Joe Bell with 64 tackles, including 16 for losses, and 5.5 sacks.
