Crusaders Lose Two at Shocker Invite

For the second straight day Valparaiso dropped a pair of games at the Shocker Invitational as the Crusaders lost 4-1 and 7-1 to UMKC and Wichita State on Saturday in Wichita, Kan.

In the opener, Valpo gave up unearned runs in the first and second before Courtney LaFerle put the Crusaders on the board with an RBI single in the fourth to plate Kelly Silvey, who had two hits in the game. UMKC (3-14) added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to secure the non-conference win for the Kangaroos.

Against Wichita State (13-7), the Shockers errupted for six runs in the top of the sixth to break open a close game. Silvey added an RBI single for the Crusaders in the bottom of the inning to score Megan Carroll, who had two hit including a double, but it was not enough for the Brown and Gold.

Valpo (0-12) will close out tournament play on Sunday morning, facing Texas Tech in a 10 a.m. contest.
