David Macchi, Valpo's all-time leader in total offense and passing yards, has signed a professional contract to play quarterback for the Bergamo Lions in Italy. Macchi, who established 11 school records, helped the Crusaders capture the Pioneer Football League Championship in 2003.

Valparaiso University's Bill Marshall was selected as the Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Crusaders' 33-0 season finale victory over Aurora.

Jeff Horton rushed for a career-high 211 yards and two touchdowns and Ryan Doerffler passed for two scores as Valpo defeated Butler 31-26.

On Saturday, the annual rivalry game at 1 p.m. between Valpo and Butler at Valpo's Brown Field carries an extra incentive. The winner of the Parents' Day contest will earn its first Pioneer Football League victory of the season in the final conference game of the 2004 campaign.

Connor Jostes threw two touchdown passes and rushed for another to lead Drake to a 37-10 Pioneer Football League victory over Valpo. The Crusaders scored their touchdown on a 5-yard run by Joe Milazzo in the fourth quarter. Andrew McCawley added a 47-yard field goal in the final period.

Valpo is looking for its first win of the Pioneer Football League season when it travels to Des Moines, Iowa to oppose first-place Drake. The contest is the final road game of the regular season.

Todd Mortensen passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another as San Diego defeated Valpo 49-14. Valpo (3-5, 0-2 PFL) scored its touchdowns on a 4-yard pass from Dustin Shamburg to Kenny Keil and on a 5-yard run by Jeff Horton.

Marques Warner and Ryan Wrobleski rushed for two touchdowns each to lead Dayton past Valpo 38-7 on Homecoming. Rob Giancola scored the Crusaders' touchdown - a 16-yard pass from Ryan Doerffler - and needs five points to become the school's all-time leading scorer.

Morehead State scored 23 points off turnovers as the Eagles defeated Valpo 29-23. Valpo scored 16 fourth-quarter points to pull within six with over three minutes left. The Crusaders (3-3) scored their touchdowns on a 2-yard pass from Dustin Shamburg to Matt Van Daele, a 2-yard pass from Ryan Doerffler to Jeff Horton, and a 13-yard pass from Doerffler to Kevin Knutson.

Anthony Doria completed a 1-yard touchdown pass to Luke Palko with two seconds left in the fourth quarter as Saint Francis (PA) defeated Valpo 17-13. Kevin Knutson caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from Joe Milazzo and Saladine Washington ran for a 1-yard score for Valpo (2-2).

After a storybook 2003 Pioneer Football League Championship season, the Valparaiso University football team plays its season opener on Saturday at North Dakota State in Fargo. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at NDSU's Fargodome.

Valparaiso University football will host Wisconsin Lutheran on Sept. 4 beginning at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Wisconsin Lutheran's stadium in Milwaukee, but the new facility will not be completed by the date of the contest.
