Nic Kooyers (Holland, Mich./Holland H.S.) was victorious in his first round qualifying match at the ITA Midwest Championships on Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich. but teammate Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) was not as fortunate in his contest.

Kooyers posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rob West of Cleveland State to advance to Friday's second round. He will meet the 14th seed, Robert Rotaru of Louisville in his next match.

Shideler battled against John Allare of Michigan State only to fall by a score of 6-4, 6-4.

Friday's action will begin at 7 a.m. CDT in Ann Arbor.
