Crusaders Tie Single-Season Victory Record
Monday, May 07, 2007Valparaiso closed out its 2007 season Monday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over Oakland in Rochester, Mich. The win gives the Crusaders a final record of 27-19, matching the 1986 and 1987 Valpo squads for the most wins in a season in school history.
Andrea Zappia (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) earned the complete-game victory for the Crusaders, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for a two-hitter. The junior struck out a career-high 14 batters, finishing the season with 130 strikeouts, third-most in a single year in Valpo history.
The Crusaders struck right away Monday, as senior Taylor Callahan (Pendergrass, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) reached base from the leadoff position and came home two batters later on an RBI double by Shannon Robinson (Toronto, Ont./John Redmond). Two innings later, Callahan led off with a double and eventually stole home on the back end of a double steal with Alicia Ashburn (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka), who later scored on a flyout to give Valpo a 3-0 lead after three innings.
In the fifth frame, senior Megan Carroll (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) plated Ashburn with an RBI single to extend the Crusader lead to 4-0. Later in the inning, Zappia reached base on a fielder's choice in her first career plate appearance and registered the first stolen base of her career, putting runners on second and third with one out. But the Crusaders would not push any more runs across the plate that inning.
Valpo added another insurance tally in the seventh inning, as Robinson recorded her third hit of the day with her second home run in as many days. Oakland came up with two singles in the seventh inning to break up Zappia's no-hit bid, but she ended the game with consecutive strikeouts to preserve the shutout.
Robinson went 3-for-3 on the day, improving her Mid-Con best batting average to .392, the second-best average in a season in Valpo history. The junior ended the campaign with a school-record 58 hits. Callahan registered two doubles to finish her career with 38 doubles and 170 hits, both Valpo records. She also had two assists in the field to finish with a record total of 424 assists.
Carroll closed out her career with 140 hits, fifth-best in Crusader history, and 34 doubles, third-most all-time at Valpo. Senior Beth Adamski (Saint John, Ind./Lake Central) tallied three putouts Monday, finishing her career with a school-record 1,038 putouts. Adamski also ranks among Valpo's all-time top-10 with 21 doubles. Allison Whitesell (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) went 1-for-2 Monday in her final game as a Crusader, while Jessica Schultz (Hubertus, Wis./Hartford Union) also closed out her Valpo career.
