Three Crusaders Earn Academic All-District Honors
Thursday, May 10, 2007Valparaiso University's Karen Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran North), Shannon Robinson (Toronto, Ont./John Redmond) and Andrea Zappia (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) have all been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V Second Team as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Korb, a sophomore outfielder, currently holds a 3.98 cumulative grade point average as a business major. Last season, she earned Mid-Continent Conference All-Academic Team honors, as well as being named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athlete. This year, Korb appeared in all 46 games for the Crusaders, hitting .263 with 26 runs scored and 20 stolen bases. She currently ranks first in Valpo history with 35 sacrifice hits and second with 36 stolen bases over her first two seasons.
Robinson, a junior catcher, holds a 3.27 cumulative GPA as a secondary education and physical education major. A Mid-Con All-Academic Team member and NFCA Scholar-Athlete, Robinson started all 46 games in 2007 and led the Crusaders and the Mid-Con with a .392 batting average. She set a new Valpo single-season record with 58 hits in 2007, as well as registering 84 total bases, second-best in a season in Crusader history.
Zappia, a junior pitcher, currently holds a 3.76 cumulative GPA as a history major. A two-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete and Mid-Con All-Academic Team member, she is the Crusader and Mid-Con all-time record holder with 14 saves, tied for 14th-best in NCAA Division I history. This past season, Zappia appeared in 30 contests, making 16 starts, and led Valpo with a 2.76 ERA and 130 strikeouts.
To be eligible for Academic All-District, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average of 3.20, and be either a starter or key reserve. District V consists of schools in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario, and Manitoba.
