Crusaders Sweep Adelphi for First Win

Valparaiso cruised to its first victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon, shutting out Adelphi 9-0 in Orlando, Fla. as part of the Crusaders’ spring trip. The nine-point scoring system was in affect for the match.
The Crusaders began strong in doubles, surrendering just six games. Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) and Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) notched an 8-4 victory over Kristina Radeva at the top of the lineup while Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) coasted to an 8-0 win over Jamie Sussman and Megan Margino at the second spot. Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) added an 8-2 victory against Kaitlyn Henn and Nicole Byrnes.
In singles, Valpo posted all six victories in straight sets. Sajevic won 6-1, 6-2 against Radeva while Schwartz followed with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Margino. Keifer earned a 6-4, 6-0 win against Sussman at the third spot while Gustafson and Wingstrom were 6-0, 6-0 victors at fourth and fifth singles respectively against Radeva and Tricia Burns. Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) added a 6-2, 6-0 win at the bottom of the lineup against Daniella Sanderson.
“It definitely feels good to get our first victory under our belt,” head coach Jay Adams said after earning his first win as a collegiate head coach. “While I was impressed with how we played, there are still some things we need to work on.”
Valparaiso (1-4) will conclude its trip to Orlando on Thursday afternoon with a 12 p.m. CDT match against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
