Honig Named U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week
Tuesday, September 11, 2007
Senior Chris Honig (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South [Indiana]) has been named the male recipient of the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week award for the week ending September 9.
Honig paced Valpo at the Crusader Open last Friday, placing fourth with a time of 20:12 over the 6K course, just two seconds behind the third-place finisher. It marked the second straight year Honig has finished in the top-five in the event. Honig’s finish helped lead the Crusaders to a second-place team finish.
In the classroom, Honig currently holds a 3.64 GPA as a history major. He earned Mid-Continent Conference Academic All-Conference honors last year and helped the men’s cross country squad receive U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team honors for the 2006 season.
Honig becomes the first Crusader to earn Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors from the Horizon League. The League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week’s competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
