Day 1 Results

Senior Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) demolished multiple records Saturday in the weight throw at the Horizon League Indoor Championships in Kent, Ohio to lead the Valparaiso men’s track and field team.

Valpo tallied 11 points on the meet’s first day, good for fifth place among the seven competing teams.  Milwaukee leads the field with 39 points.

Bartholomew registered a toss of 67’9 ¾” for the event victory in the weight throw.  The mark bested his own school record by over four feet, and broke the previous Horizon League Championship mark by better than five feet.  It also is an NCAA Indoor Championship provisional qualifying mark.  The senior won the event Saturday by over 11 feet.

Tom Heun(Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) qualified for Sunday’s final in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.66 seconds in the prelims, the third-fastest time in the event in Valpo history.  Heun also competed in the long jump Saturday, recording a mark of 19’7”.  Also on the infield, Caleb Meyer (Seward, Neb./Seward) placed sixth in the pole vault with a height of 13’1 ½”.

Joel Hartenberger (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) led Valpo on the track, finishing tenth in the 5,000m run with a time of 15:58.59.  Rich Krupar (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) crossed the line in the 800m run in 1:57.65, just one one-hundredth of a second shy of qualifying for Sunday’s finals.  In other track events, Ryan Ruppel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) led Valpo in the 60m dash with a time of 7.53 seconds, Martenzie Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) recorded a time of 23.22 seconds in the 200m dash, and Mike Bley (Schererville, Ind./Andrean) paced the Crusaders in the 400m dash, crossing the line in 57.86 seconds.

The Crusaders return to the track in Kent Sunday morning at 11 a.m. for the second day of the two-day meet.
