Valparaiso University head coach Stacy Adams has announced that 45 players have committed to play football for the Crusaders beginning this fall.

The Valparaiso University football team has announced that it will now open the 2009 season against Saint Joseph's (Ind.) on the road in Rensselaer, Ind. as opposed to at Brown due to other scheduling considerations. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.

Valparaiso University had five football players voted to the Academic All-Pioneer Football League First and Second Teams, as voted upon by the conference's sports information directors. The Crusader selections included First Team accolades for Ryan Kozey (Waterford, Wis./Union H.S.) and Adam Rundh (Aalborg, Denmark/Orjanskolan [Sweden] H.S.). Tim Kratz (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North H.S.), Ryan Koepke (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.), and Matt Mancl (Neenah, Wis./Neenah H.S.) were named to the Second Team.

Valparaiso heads out on the road for the final time Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders travel to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell, the Pioneer Football League's newest member. The Fighting Camels are playing collegiate football for the first time since the 1950 season, when Campbell played as a junior college program. Valpo is looking for its first victory of the season away from Brown Field while Campbell is looking for its first home win since reintroducing football.

Valparaiso was represented by all three Pioneer Football League Players of the Week following the victory over Davidson when the league announced the honors on Sunday afternoon.  Ross Wiemer (Burlington, Wis./Burlington H.S.) took home Offensive honors while Anthony Curry (Merrillville, Ind./Merrillville H.S.) earned the Defensive award.  David Hamaker (Plano, Texas/West H.S.) was the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week.

Coming off of a thrilling overtime victory against Davidson last Saturday, Valparaiso looks to continue its success at home this Saturday as the Crusaders host Butler in the Battle for the Hoosier Helmet.  The Crusaders are looking to retain the helmet after winning last year’s contest between the two instate rivals.

San Diego scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half to break open a tie game on the way to defeating Valparaiso 42-14 on Saturday afternoon in San Diego, Calif.  The Crusaders tied the game 14-14 at halftime, but was unable to get the offense moving in the second half.

Valpo is set for the 88th home opener in the program’s history at Brown Field on Saturday afternoon as the Crusaders entertain Concordia (Wis.).  The game also marks the inaugural game on the new Brown Field ProGrass playing surface, which was installed over the summer.  Both schools are looking for their first victory of the 2008 season with Valpo trying to rebound from a loss at Saint Francis (Ill.) one week ago Thursday.
