Valpo Bowling Program Brings on Washington as Assistant Coach

Valparaiso bowling head coach Stephen Anthony announced today that Shon Washington has been hired as an assistant coach and will begin his duties August 1. Washington comes to Valpo having had much success as a coach both on the high school and collegiate levels.
“I am very excited that Shon has joined the coaching staff and bowling program at Valparaiso University,” said Anthony. “Shon possesses a tremendous background competing, teaching, and coaching the sport of bowling. His knowledge of the sport and the demands to be successful at the NCAA level will be a tremendous asset to our program and the development of our athletes.”
Washington has spent the last three years as the head women’s bowling coach at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Hammond, Ind. Leading the program from its inception, Washington led the Crimson Wave to the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships in just its second season and ended the 2007-2008 season ranked 14th He led Cal College to a second straight appearance in the Team Championships last season as well. nationally.
Washington also previously worked the last eight years as the head girls bowling coach at Lake Central H.S. in St. John, Ind. A two-time Post-Tribune Coach of the Year with the Lady Indians, Washington guided Lake Central to three state titles in just eight seasons of existence, winning in 2003, 2007 and 2009. Under his watch, the Lady Indians also captured two semi-state, three regional, four sectional and six conference titles.
An excellent teacher of the game, Washington currently holds his USBC Bronze Coaching License. Also an accomplished bowler himself, he has spent 14 years as a PBA member and regional tour pro.
“Shon's experience coaching at the high school and collegiate level, especially in NW Indiana, will serve our program well with respect to recruiting and player development,” said Anthony. “I am most impressed with his coaching style and philosophy and I know that we will be able to create an environment that will enable our athletes and team to be very competitive and to represent Valparaiso University at the highest level.”
