Valparaiso’s women’s swim team moved up one position on the final day of competition at the Calvin Invitational on Saturday and finished in fifth place out of nine teams in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Crusaders finished with 240 points, well ahead of sixth place Northern Michigan which finished with 187 points.  Grand Valley State easily won the team title with 1,223 points while host Calvin was second.

Natalie Jarrett (Lebanon, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) posted a fifth place finish for the Brown and Gold in the 200 backstroke.  Her prelim time of 2:11.72 is the third best all-time in school history.  Shaunna Dangremond (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino H.S.) also earned an 11th place finish in the event.

The duo also both finished in the top seven of the 200 individual medley.  Jarrett again was fifth while moving into fourth on Valpo’s all-time list with a time of 2:13.65.  Dangremond was seventh, turning in a time of 2:15.20.

Justine Barnes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams H.S.) added a 12th place effort in the 100 butterfly.  The sophomore turned in a time of 1:00.74, her best of the year.

Amy Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect H.S.) and Sarah Robertson (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville H.S.) finished 12th and 14th respectively in the 200 breaststroke.  Andracki touched the wall in 2:35.90 while Robertson finished in 2:38.56.

In the 100 freestyle, Laura Rickey (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville H.S.) led the way for the Crusaders by finishing 11th, turning in a time of 55.70 seconds.

Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West H.S.) led the way for the Crusaders with a 16th place finish in the 500 freestyle.  She turned in her best time of the day in the morning prelims, finishing in 5:23.10.

Valparaiso will now take a break from competition until January 14 when the Crusaders host Green Bay in a dual meet at the Athletics-Recreation Center pool.  The first event begins at 5 p.m. against the Phoenix.
