Junior goalkeeper Kristen Manski (Saint Charles, Ill./North) made a career-high 13 saves en route to matching the Crusader career record for shutouts as the Valparaiso women’s soccer team played to a scoreless double-overtime draw at Wright State Sunday afternoon in Dayton, Ohio.

Manski reached double figures in stops for the first time in her career, making a key save late in the first half to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard.  The junior finished five saves in each regulation period before making one stop in the first overtime and two saves in the second extra session.  Manski now has 20 career clean sheets, matching Mele Cabral and Erin Murray for the most in Valpo history, while her eight shutouts this season are just two shy of the Crusader single-season record.

"I thought it was a good match today," said Crusader head coach John Marovich.  "Considering the conditions going against the wind, we did a really good job in the first half.  Then in the second half, we took advantage of the wind and had some chances - we got to the end line a few times, got some good crosses in.  Kristen was very good in goal for us today, but their goalkeeper was very good as well, and Wright State played well."

Both sides had plenty of chances on a windy Sunday afternoon, as Wright State (6-3-6, 1-1-3 Horizon) finished with 26 shot attempts to the Crusaders’ 20.  WSU went with the wind in the first half, out-shooting Valpo 12-5, but the Crusaders had a solid effort on a cross to the far post to Jordyn Ryfiak (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) which was pushed just wide as the game went into the half scoreless.

Going with the wind in the second half, Valpo out-shot the Raiders 13-7 and earned seven corner kicks.  Manski had to come up big early in the stanza, as Wright State was awarded a penalty kick in the 50th minute.  The junior goalkeeper was there to make the save to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard, though.  Among Valpo’s 13 second-half efforts was a shot by Ryfiak with about 20 minutes to play which went off the crossbar, as the game would eventually enter extra time with no score.  WSU held a 7-3 shot advantage in extra time, but neither side could push one across the goal line.

Valpo ended the afternoon with 11 shots on goal versus the Raiders’ 13, as WSU goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy was credited with eight saves.  The Crusaders also held a significant 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

"Unfortunately, we weren't able to put one away for the three points," said Marovich.  "But Wright State is a good side, and any time you can go on the road in league play and get points, it's a good thing.  League play is about accumulating as many points as you can, and we were able to get one today - now it's all about moving forward and preparing for Loyola."

Valparaiso (9-4-2, 2-1-1 Horizon) returns home to Eastgate Field on Wednesday afternoon as the Crusaders take on Loyola at 3 p.m.  The game can be heard live on WVUR, 95.1 FM, Valparaiso and online at www.valpoathletics.com, which will also have a link for live stats.
