Monday, October 22, 2012
For the first time in program history, the Valparaiso women’s golf team had multiple players shoot even par or better in the same round, while the Crusaders smashed their previous single-round team score record as they sit in third place after day one at the Dayton Invitational.
The Crusaders posted a team score of 299 on Monday in the first round of the 36-hole event, 10 shots better than their previous team record for 18 holes. Valpo sits in third place out of the 17 competing teams after day one. Detroit leads the team standings with a score of 291, while Ohio’s Angela Codian leads the individual standings after an opening-round 68.
Junior Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) led the Crusaders on Monday, going under par with a one-under round of 70, good for third place after day one. Junior Kelly Voigt (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) nearly matched Kleckner, settling for an even-par 71 to enter Tuesday tied for fourth place.
Freshman Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) and junior Erika Pfaender (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) each shot rounds of 79 on Monday and will enter the final day of play tied for 32nd place. Sophomore A.J. Selig (Hortonville, Wis./Appleton West) rounded out Valpo’s lineup with an 86 Monday and is tied for 80th place.
Valparaiso will conclude the Dayton Invitational on Tuesday, with play scheduled for an 8 a.m. CDT shotgun start.
