Senior Ryan Broekhoff (Frankston, Victoria, Australia/Australian Institute of Sport) has been named the Horizon League men's basketball Player of the Week by the league office, while redshirt junior Bobby Capobianco (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland [Indiana]) has been tabbed as the league's co-Newcomer of the Week.
Broekhoff claims his fourth Player of the Week nod this season after pacing the Crusaders in a pair of wins last week. The senior started the week on Tuesday with a huge first half against UIC, scoring 19 points and hitting five 3-pointers, including a 30-footer to close the half. Broekhoff ended the night with a game-high 22 points in just 25 minutes while also grabbing six rebounds. Then, on Saturday, Broekhoff led a balanced Crusader effort, scoring 15 points in a nationally-televised win at Cleveland State. The senior also added four steals against the Vikings.
For the week, Broekhoff averaged 18.5 ppg on 54.2% shooting from the floor, including a 9-of-16 effort from behind the 3-point line. Broekhoff becomes just the second Horizon League player in the last 12 years to earn at least four Player of the Week honors in the same season from the league office, joining Norris Cole, who picked up five weekly awards in 2010-11.
Capobianco shared the Newcomer of the Week award with Wright State's Jerran Young after nearly posting a triple-double off the bench against UIC. The redshirt junior tallied a line of 10 points, nine rebounds and nine assists against the Flames, becoming the first Division I player to reach those marks off the bench in nearly five years. Capobianco then added 13 points in just 13 minutes of action in Valpo's win at Cleveland State. On the week, Capobianco averaged 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, hitting 63.6% from the floor and 90% from the free throw line.
