Wegehaupt, Segatto Score First Place Finishes vs. Milwaukee
Friday, October 25, 2013
Senior Tate Wegehaupt (Tigard, Ore./Tigard) scored a first-place finish versus the Milwaukee Panthers Friday night at the ARC. Wegehaupt stopped the clock at 2:10.20 in the 200-yard breaststroke, a little more than a half-second ahead Jacob Melville and his time of 2:10.82. The first-place finish garnered nine points for Valpo.
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as a strong Milwaukee squad used ten first-place finishes to power past the Crusaders 125-76 on the men's side. Wegehaupt nearly knocked off Tim Halverson in the 100-yard freestyle, but the Panthers' sophomore edged Wegehaupt out 48.16 to 49.03.
Sophomore Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) had a tight 200-yard butterfly race with UWM's Robert Miller. Miller hit the wall at 2:00.11, just a blink ahead of Castro Diaz's time of 2:00.84.
On the women's side, Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan) scored an individual victory for the second straight dual meet. Three weeks ago, she finished with the fastest time in the 1000-yard freestyle. On Friday, the junior led the way in the 200-yard butterfly. Segatto tapped the wall at 2:13.39, nearly a full second ahead of Milwaukee's Mary Kuyvenhoven (2:14.25). Segatto did earn four points via a second-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle.
Newcomer Marley Cripe (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville [Liberty]) had a time of 24.59 in the 50-yard freestyle. The junior transfer was edged out by Emily McClellan (24.45).
Milwaukee prevailed with a 126-74 win in the women's half.
The Crusaders will have little time to rest up before jumping back in the pool. They compete Saturday morning at the Indiana Intercollegiate Invitational in West Lafayette beginning at 11:00 am CT.
