Valparaiso senior pitcher Sam McGee (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week after tossing a pair of shutouts last week and setting the Crusader career record for victories.

McGee’s first appearance of the week came in the second game of a three-game sweep over Wright State, as the senior tossed six shutout innings to earn the complete-game win.  McGee scattered five hits and walked nobody, allowing just one Raider to make it to third base, and picked up four strikeouts.

The senior then capped Valpo’s perfect 6-0 week in league play with another complete-game shutout, this time silencing a Youngstown State team which had scored 15 runs over two games the day before.  McGee again allowed just one runner to reach third base, surrendering just six hits and walking none.  The win was the 51st of McGee’s career, breaking Laura Pajakowski’s previous Valpo career record of 50.

With the pair of shutouts last week, McGee has now thrown four consecutive shutouts over a stretch of 25 scoreless innings.  She also hasn’t given up an earned run since March 20, a stretch of 33 innings since last surrendering an earned tally.  McGee, who received the weekly honor from the league office for the first time, and the rest of the Crusaders return to action Wednesday with a single game at Notre Dame at 4 p.m. CDT.
