Valpo Sweeps Kangaroos

Valparaiso revenged an earlier loss to UMKC by sweeping the Kangaroos 30-23, 31-29, 30-17 on Friday evening at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Heather Hynds (Sylvan Lake, Ill./Mundelein H.S.) paced the Crusaders attack, hitting .545 for the match, with 12 kills and no errors. Michelle Robinson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal H.S.) and Marion Hansen (Huntley, Ill./Huntley H.S.) each added 11 kills as the Brown and Gold moved to 16-8 overall, 6-2 in the Mid-Continent Conference.

Hansen also tallied 11 digs to complete her double-double, while Katie Bova (Milwaukee, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels H.S.) and Sara Silcox (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City H.S.) each added ten digs. Cyndi Norman (Minooka, Ill./Minooka H.S.) dished out 41 assists, while Hynds recorded five blocks on the evening.

Sara Foster led the Kangaroos with ten kills, while Angela Melka hit .389 with seven slams. Jana Lacer tallied a match-high 17 digs and Charmane Wong added 13 for UMKC (12-14, 4-5 Mid-Con).

The Crusaders held a 57-37 advantage in kills and a 9-5 upper hand in blocks in recording their ninth straight home victory overall, and 15th consecutive Mid-Con match at the ARC. Valpo hit .247 for the match, boosted by its .381 performance in game three.

Valpo will host first place Oral Roberts on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in the Crusaders final home match of the season. The Brown and Gold's two seniors, Jen Baird (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley H.S.) and Elissa Malthaner (Brighton, Mich./Brighton H.S.) will be honored prior to the contest.
