Thursday, February 08, 2007

Valparaiso University's Betsy Rietema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Christian H.S.) and Carrie Myers (Stickleyville, Va./Lee H.S.) have each been named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Teams announced on Thursday.

Rietema earned First Team honors for the second straight season while Myers was named to the Second Team for the first time in her career.

Rietema, a senior forward, leads Valpo in scoring while ranking third in the Mid-Continent Conference averaging 13.7 points per game. Her 6.4 rebounds per contest are also eighth best in the league. For her career, Rietema has moved into eighth place all-time at Valpo with 1,169 points while ranking 13th with 528 rebounds.

In the classroom, Rietema has also excelled, posting a 3.97 grade point average while double majoring in psychology and chemistry. She has twice been a member of the Mid-Con All-Academic Team as well as being named to the Mid-Con Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence last year. By being named to the All-District First Team, Rietema is now eligible for Academic All-America honors as well.

Myers, a senior guard, ranks 18th in the Mid-Con scoring 9.3 points per contest. The leading three-point shooter in the league, she is eighth in NCAA Division I making 2.9 three-pointers per game. Her 42.9% shooting percentage from beyond the arc also ranks 17th in the country. During her career, Myers has made 196 triples, third most in school history.

In the classroom, Myers has a 3.81 grade point average with a double major in graphic design and French. She too is a two-time Academic All Mid-Con selection as well as being named to the Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence.

To be eligible for Academic All-District and Academic All-America, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore status, own a minimum grade-point average of 3.20, and be either a starter or key reserve. District V consists of schools in Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario, and Manitoba.
