Thursday, July 12, 2007

The Valparaiso University women’s basketball program will host its 13th annual Fall Coaches’ Clinic on September 14-15 at the Athletics-Recreation Center.  The event will feature six collegiate head coaches, including four at the Division I level, as well as a high school coach.

Friday evening’s session features former Purdue head coach Gene Keady speaking on a pair of topics while Justin Zemanski from Anthony Wayne High School in Ohio also will give a presentation.  Keady won more than 500 games for the Boilermakers and is a six-time national Coach of the Year.  Zemanski has led the Generals to back-to-back sectional championships.

On Saturday, Crusader head coach Keith Freeman will begin the day followed by Oakland University head coach Beckie Francis.  Francis has led the Golden Grizzlies to two NCAA Tournament appearances as well as Oakland’s first WNIT bid.  Curt Miller is also scheduled to speak before lunch.  Miller lead Bowling Green State University to a 31-4 record last season as the Falcons advanced to the Sweet 16.

Indiana Wesleyan head coach Steve Brooks will present on Saturday afternoon after leading his team to a perfect 38-0 record and the NAIA Division II national championship last season, earning him WBCA National Coach of the Year honors.  Finally, Mark Scherer from Elmhurst College will wrap up the clinic.  Sherer, the men’s head coach at Elmhurst College, guided his squad to a 21-6 record last year and a national ranking that reached as high as five.

The cost of the clinic is $100 with multiple coaches from the same school eligible for various discounted prices.  For more information or to register, contact Marla Liesch at 219-464-5146 or Marla.Liesch@valpo.edu.
