Women's Basketball Embarks on First Road Trip of Season
Ella Ellenson is one of five true freshmen on Valpo's roster this season.

Valparaiso (1-0, 0-0 MVC)
at Miami (Ohio) (1-2, 0-0 MAC)

Game No. 2 – Tuesday, Nov. 21 – 11 a.m. CT
John D. Millett Hall (6,400) – Oxford, Ohio

Next Up in Crusader Basketball:  The Valparaiso University women’s basketball team will hit the road for the first time this season in advance of Tuesday’s matinee at Miami (Ohio). The Crusaders will look to build upon a strong showing in the season opener as they lock horns with the RedHawks.

Last Time Out: Valpo outscored IU Kokomo 29-7 in the second quarter on opening night at the Athletics-Recreation Center, providing the separation in an eventual 81-47 win over the Cougars. Senior Dani Franklin enjoyed a 26-point performance, while Bryce Blood racked up a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds while making five of her seven field goal attempts. The Crusaders had 14 steals and outrebounded the Cougars 46-27.

Following the Crusaders: Tuesday’s game will air on ESPN3 and can also be heard on 95.1 FM WVUR with Ben Ariano (play-by-play) and Brandon Vickrey (color commentary) providing the radio call. Links to live video, audio and stats can be found on ValpoAthletics.com.

Head Coach Tracey Dorow: Tracey Dorow was named head coach of the Valparaiso women's basketball program in April of 2012. The 2017-18 season is her sixth in charge of Valpo's program. Dorow has led the Crusaders to a Horizon League tournament victory in four of her first five seasons at the helm. During the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, Valpo boasted three all-freshman team members, a Freshman of the Year, a Sixth Player of the Year, an all-league second-team honoree and an all-defensive team member. The Crusaders have enjoyed a significant uptick in all-league recognition under Dorow's watch, as they had three total league honors in the five seasons before that three-year span. Dorow arrived at Valpo after spending 14 seasons as the head coach at Ferris State University, guiding the Bulldogs to four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division championships, and four 20-win seasons.

Series Notes: The Crusaders will take on the RedHawks for the third time in the last four seasons and attempt to garner their first ever victory over Miami (Ohio). The Crusaders have dropped all eight meetings between the two teams, a series that dates back to 1992-93. However, the all-time record of 0-8 is somewhat deceiving when it comes to assessing the competitiveness of the series, as four of the eight games have been decided by three points or fewer including two overtime affairs. One of those tight games was the most recent matchup, a 75-72 Valpo loss on Dec. 2, 2015. The Crusaders made a game of it after trailing 22-11 after one quarter, but couldn’t quite erase the early hole. Five Crusaders scored in double figures, including two members of the active roster, Dani Franklin (18) and Meredith Hamlet (12). Miami’s top two scorers from that contest are also members of its current team – Baleigh Reid (18) and Molly McDonagh (16). Valpo’s last visit to Oxford saw the Crusaders own a 40-39 edge at halftime, only to fall 82-59 on Dec. 3, 2014.

Valpo in The Valley: Valparaiso University is competing in its first season as a member institution in the Missouri Valley Conference after a 10-year run in the Horizon League. The Valley is celebrating 25 years of women’s athletics in the conference over the course of the 2017-18 academic and athletic year. Valpo head coach Tracey Dorow played at Illinois State during the first season of women’s athletics in The Valley and is back for Year 25 and her first season as a head coach in the conference.

Worth Noting

  • The Crusaders are looking to obtain their first win in the first game away from the ARC in a season since beating UIC on Nov. 19, 1999.
  • A win on Tuesday would give Valpo a 2-0 start for just the second time in the last eight years. The Crusaders also started 2-0 in 2012-13, Tracey Dorow’s first season at the helm, with wins over Indiana and Purdue Calumet.
  • Each of Valpo’s last two season-opening victories have featured 34-point margins. Prior to this year’s 81-47 win over IU Kokomo, the Crusaders topped Butler 91-57 on Nov. 14, 2014.
  • Valpo’s 14 steals in the season opener against IU Kokomo were the team’s most in a single game since Jan. 23, 2014, an 85-44 win over Detroit Mercy that featured 18 Crusader steals.
  • Bryce Blood became the first Crusader with a double-double in a season opener since Aimee Litka had 17 points and 10 rebounds against Bowling Green on Nov. 19, 2008. This marked the first Valpo freshman with a double-double since 2015.
  • Blood also became the second player with the first name Bryce to ever play men’s or women’s basketball at Valpo.
  • Valpo has had a true freshman score nine points or more in the season opener each of the last four seasons. All four players who have done so are on the active roster – Bryce Blood, Grace Hales, Meredith Hamlet and Dani Franklin.

Milestone/Record Book Watch

  • Hannah Schaub enters Tuesday’s game 17th in program history in career assists with 237. She needs two assists to pass Jeanette Gray (1999-2003) for 16th on the career list and eight to surpass her former teammate Lexi Miller (2012-2016) for 15th.
  • Dani Franklin enters this game with 1,262 career points, sixth in program history. She needs 12 points to pass Amber Schober (1998-2002) and become the first Crusader to crack the top five on Valpo’s all-time scoring list in the last decade.
  • Franklin holds a career scoring average of 13.9 points per game, which ranks second in program history. The program record is 18.4 points per game, set by Debbie Bolen (1989-93).
  • Franklin is tied for sixth in program history in career made field goals with Amber Schober (1998-2002) at 471. Franklin will take sole possession of sixth with her next make and needs 21 more field goals to crack the top five.
  • Franklin ranks ninth in program history in 3-point field goals made with 141, needing five more to pass Megan Newcomer (1996-2000) for eighth and six to pass Betsy Adams (2008-2012) for seventh.
  • Franklin owns a career 3-point field goal percentage of .394, which currently sits third all-time.
  • Franklin is 17th in program history in rebounding with 503. She’s 20 boards away from passing Gina Lange (2009-13) for 16th.

Inside the RedHawks

  • This is the just the second game for the Crusaders, but it marks the fourth game of the season for Miami (Ohio). The RedHawks started the season with a 91-64 victory over Valpo’s former Horizon League foe, Detroit Mercy, before falling 75-66 at Purdue and 73-62 at Cincinnati.
  • The RedHawks are under the direction of first-year head coach Megan Duffy, who spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan. She was a four-year letter winner at Notre Dame.
  • Several Miami assistants are familiar faces for the Crusaders to see on the opposing bench. Frank Goldsberry spent the last five seasons on Milwaukee’s coaching staff, while Ke’Sha Blanton spent the last five seasons at Detroit Mercy as an assistant. The third assistant is Michaela Mabrey, who played at the ARC on Nov. 23, 2015 as a senior at Notre Dame. She started and scored five points in 18 minutes in Notre Dame’s victory over Valpo.
  • Valpo is the first of two MVC opponents on Miami’s schedule this season. The RedHawks will play at Indiana State on Dec. 19. It’s the first of two MAC opponents for Valpo, as the Crusaders head to Bowling Green on Nov. 28.
  • Miami (Ohio) has its leading scorer back as Lauren Dickerson played in all 32 games and averaged 16.3 points per game a year ago. In fact, the RedHawks have 100 percent of their scoring back from last season. Dickerson is averaging 20.7 points per game through three games and is joined in double figures by Savannah Kluesner at 16.3.
  • Fifth-year senior Megan Galloway started her career in the Horizon League and was an all-freshman team player for Detroit Mercy in 2013-14.

A Look Back at 2016-17

  • Valpo had the biggest jump from the first half of league play to the second of any Horizon League squad. In first matchups against Horizon League opponents, Valpo went 0-9, before going 4-5 in second meetings. The plus-four win turnaround was the best in the Horizon League. No other team was better than plus-two.
  • The Crusaders have now captured league tournament wins in five of the last six seasons.
  • Valpo went 4-4 over its final eight games of the regular season, its best eight-game finish to a season of the Tracey Dorow era.
  • Dani Franklin was named to the all-league second-team, becoming the first Valpo player to make the Horizon League first or second team since Tabitha Gerardot in 2012-13.
  • The Crusaders had an all-league representative and an all-defensive team member in the same season for the first time since joining the Horizon League.
  • Franklin finished the season with 559 points, which ranks second in program history for points in a single year. Debbie Bolen’s 1991-92 season (638) is the program record.
  • Franklin finished the season at 18.0 points per game, ranking fifth in program history for single-season scoring average. She also shot 85.8 percent at the free-throw line, the second-best single-season free throw percentage in program history.
  • Hannah Schaub completed the season with 134 assists, ranking seventh in program history for assists in a single season.
  • The Crusaders had twice as many wins in February (four) than they had in December and January combined (two).

Inside the 2016-17 Roster

  • Valpo has nine players on the roster listed at 6-foot or taller. This is the most players listed at 6-foot or taller on the roster in program history. Previously, the most was eight in 1990-91 and 1995-96.
  • Valpo has had five freshmen on the roster each of the last two seasons. Prior to 2016-17, the Crusaders hadn’t featured five true freshmen since 2010-11. This year’s team has 10 freshmen, redshirt freshmen and sophomores, the most since the 2003-04 season.
  • In addition to five true freshmen, two redshirt freshmen and three sophomores, the Crusaders feature three juniors and two seniors.
  • This year’s version of the Crusaders includes four Indiana natives. This marks the most Hoosiers on the team since the 2013-2014 season.
  • Three others are from Illinois, three from Ohio, two from Minnesota, one from Michigan, one from Iowa and one from Wisconsin. Seven states are represented on the Valpo roster.
