Valparaiso bowling head coach Stephen Anthony announced today that Katie Shumaker (Trafford, Pa./Penn-Trafford [Maryland Eastern Shore]) will be transferring into Valparaiso to join the Crusader bowling squad as a sophomore for the 2010-2011 campaign.

"When I was debating on where to transfer to, Valparaiso University was the first school that came to mind,” said Shumaker.  “I was looking for more of an academic challenge, and Valpo is known for their great programs.  I believe I will enjoy my future at Valpo.  Not only will I be challenged more academically, I will also be able to participate as a team member on the bowling team.  The team has done very well as a first-year program and I hope to add to its success next year."

Shumaker bowled sparingly for the Hawks, who concluded the season ranked third in the nation, as a freshman.  She was a four-year letterwinner at Penn-Trafford H.S., rolling as the Warriors’ anchor bowler all four years.  Shumaker, a two-time First Team All-State and three-time First Team All-League honoree, qualified for the Pennsylvania state championship meet on three occasions as an individual, while also helping her squad to three state appearances.

"I would like to welcome Katie to Valparaiso University and our bowling program,” said Anthony.  “I am excited that she has decided to join us.  I have been very impressed with Katie and her motivation for coming to Valpo and I believe she will impact our team on and off the lanes.  Her experience at UMES will certainly help our program as she had the opportunity to bowl for a great program; those lessons will certainly help our program.  The team has embraced Katie's decision and I know she will be a terrific fit for our team and University community."

Shumaker will be the fifth newcomer to the Crusader bowling squad next season, joining incoming freshmen Alyssa Alvarez, Kaity Galka, Jill Larson and Nicole Sanhamel.
