Playing in the Horizon League Women’s Golf Championship for the first time, Valparaiso saw rain interrupt its second round on Saturday afternoon, as play was suspended with 33 of the 35 golfers still on the course due to a three hour rain delay during round two at Kearney Hills Golf Course in Lexington, Ky.

The Crusaders shot 390 as a team in the first round, and are currently in seventh place in the league standings.  Detroit leads the way through the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event, shooting 12-over par 300 on the 6,062-yard, par 72 layout.  The Titans have a 10-shot lead over Butler and a 12-shot advantage over Youngstown State.

“This was an exciting day for us,” head coach Mike Higdon said.  “It’s our first conference championship in our inaugural season.  We really felt welcomed into the league.”

Annie Nolan (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) led the way for the Brown and Gold in the opening round, shooting 91.  She has finished 14 holes in round two.  Jessica O’Brien (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) added a 93 for Valpo over the opening 18 holes, and has played 13 holes in her second round.

Kathleen Cooper (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) carded a 100 in round one and has played 15 holes in her second  round.  Sarah Al-Momar (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) has just one hole to play in her second round after shooting 106 during her opening 18 holes.

Kadie Savoree (Paris, Ill./Paris H.S.) was one of just two players to complete 36 holes on Saturday.  She shot 127 in the first round.

“Everyone started out strong over the first nine holes and had some difficulties on the second nine,” Higdon added.  “It was tough for us coming out of the weather delay but everyone had the same conditions.”

Play is slated to resume at 6 a.m. CDT on Sunday morning with the remaining holes of the second round before beginning the final round.
