Crusaders Open Cardinal Classic on Saturday

The Valparaiso women’s golf team kicked off the two-day Cardinal Classic in Yorktown, Ind. on Saturday, hosted by Ball State, finishing the day in seventh place out of 12 competing teams.

The Crusaders posted a score of 325 on Saturday in the first of two 18-hole rounds.  The host Cardinals lead the team scoring with a Saturday round of 309, while Marshall’s Korakot Simsiriwong paces the individual standings with an even-par round of 72.

Junior Kelly Voigt (Palatine, Ill./Fremd), coming off of individual medalist honors in her last tournament, sits inside the top-10 halfway through the tournament, shooting a round of 78 on Saturday, good for an eighth-place tie.  Juniors Michelle Kleckner (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale) and Erika Pfaender (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) posted identical rounds of 81 to open tournament action on Saturday, as both are in a tie for 25th place.

Senior Jessica O’Brien (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) shot an 85 on Saturday and is in a tie for 45th place entering Sunday’s final round.  Sophomore A.J. Selig (Hortonville, Wis./Appleton West) rounded out the Crusader lineup on Saturday with a round of 86, good for a tie for 49th place.

Valparaiso closes out the Cardinal Classic with another 18-hole round on Sunday, with play scheduled for an 8 a.m. CDT shotgun start.
