On of the coldest days of the season met the Valparaiso University women’s golf team on Monday as the Crusaders played round one of the Green Bay Lady Phoenix Fall Classic in Green Bay, Wis.

With temperatures never reaching 40, and a light rain and snow falling on the course, the Brown and Gold posted a first round score of 390 to place fifth at the midway point of the 36-hole event played at the 5,950-yard, par-73 Green Bay Country Club.  Chicago State leads the tournament at 330.

“Considering the conditions we didn’t play too bad,” head coach Mike Higdon said.  “The girls played through snow and rain and this was probably the worst weather they have ever played in.”

Annie Nolan (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) led the way for the Crusaders with a first round 87, and sits just seven shots off the lead through 18 holes.  The 87 marked a season low for the freshman.

Kathleen Cooper (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) carded a 91 for Valpo while Jessica O’Brien (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) added a 102.

The tournament will wrap up on Tuesday morning with the final 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m.
