Gaugert Ties Career-Low, Finishes Top-Five at Day One of Horizon League Championship

The Valparaiso women’s golf team opened play on Friday at the Horizon League Championship at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Crusaders played on the Las Colinas Course and finished round one in fifth place with a team score of 334, just seven strokes behind Green Bay.

Junior Annie Gaugert (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) tied her career low for 18-holes with a 76 to finish in a tie for fifth to lead the Crusaders. She finished with 12 pars on the day tied for second among the field.

“I thought Annie played well today,” head coach Mat Blair said. “She started out a little rough, but she stuck to her game plan and finished well.”

Freshman Katie Willenbrink (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) carded an 84 to finish in a tie for 18th and closed out the round strong by birding number 18. She also birdied number eight.

Junior Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) birdied number 15 en route to an 86 for round one, finishing in a tie for 26th.

Sophomore Angie Kim (Schaumburg, Ill./Fremd) finished two strokes back as she shot an 88 on the day to finish in 31st, her first round since the Bulldog Florida Invitational. She recorded a birdie on number five.

Sophomore Sydney Shrum (Cloverdale, Ind./Cloverdale) finished in a 32nd as she shot an 89.

Without any seniors on the team and having only two players with experience in the league championship, Blair is looking for the team to finish strong over the next two days.

“Our inexperience showed up today,” Blair said. “The hard thing about it is, you don’t have experience, and everyone else has it, they have three to four years of experience and our most experienced player only has two. Hopefully our trend of starting slow and finishing strong will continue.”

The Horizon League Women’s Golf Championship continues Saturday morning as Sydney Shrum tees off at 6:40 a.m. CT at Las Colinas Course. Angie Kim and Sibil Gill follow at 6:50 and 7:00, while Katie Willenbrink and Annie Gaugert tee off at 7:20 and 7:30 a.m., respectively.
