Crusaders Face Heavy Wind at IPFW Spring Classic Sunday

The Valparaiso University women’s golf team kicked off its first tournament of April on Sunday, just two hours down the road in Fort Wayne, Ind. at the IPFW Spring Classic.

The Crusaders were led by freshman Kylie Shoemake (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central), who posted a first-round score of 81 over the par-71, 5,966-yard course at Pine Valley Country Club. Shoemake’s first-round score has her in 12th place after the opening 18 holes.

Senior Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) and sophomore Kiana Jongsma (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) tied for second for the Crusaders on Sunday, both shooting an 88 to place them in 28th position.

Junior Sydney Shrum (Cloverdale, Ind./Cloverdale) closed out the first day with a score of 92, while junior Angie Kim (Schaumburg, Ill./Fremd) shot a 94 on the day.

As a team the Crusaders finished day one of the two-day event with a team score of 349, placing them in seventh position, just three strokes off of fifth place.

The Valparaiso women will close out the IPFW Spring Classic tomorrow morning starting at 9 a.m.
