Valpo Tops Western to Move to 2-0 in Mid-Con
Friday, October 4, 2002
Lori Moore (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) and Emily King (Colona, Ill./United Township H.S.) each scored first half goals as Valparaiso defeated Western Illinois 2-1 on Friday afternoon in Macomb, Ill.

Moore wasted little time putting the Crusaders on the scoreboard as her breakaway goal came at the 3:32 mark. King then added a direct free kick from 25 yards out with just 25 seconds remaining in the half as Valpo took a 2-0 lead into intermission.

Katie Campion scored on a breakaway at the 75:30 mark to bring the Westerwinds within one, but that was all Western Illinois (1-8-1, 1-3 Mid-Con) could tally for the afternoon.

Kristen Templin (Madison, Wis./Middleton H.S.) made six saves for Valpo to preserve the victory. Sarah Yakapovich made three saves in the first half for the Westerwinds while Carey Cowhey made two in the second stanza.

Valpo (3-5-1, 2-0) outshot WIU 14-10 for the match and held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Crusaders will return to action on Sunday afternoon when Valpo travels to Eastern Illinois for a 1 p.m. match.
