Valpo Women's Soccer Seeks First-Ever Mid-Con Title

CRUSADERS READY FOR CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
Valparaiso enters the 2002 Mid-Continent Conference Tournament seeking their first conference title. The Mid-Continent Conference's automatic NCAA Tournament bid is also on the line.

The Crusaders enter the tournament having dropped six of its last seven matches, following a 2-1 loss against Loyola (Ill.) on Sunday.

Valpo finished in second place in the Mid-Continent Conference with a 4-1 league mark, while posting a 5-12-1 mark overall.

MATCHES TO BE CARRIED ON WVUR
All Mid-Continent Conference Tournament games in which Valparaiso is participating in will be broadcast on WVUR (95.1-FM). The games will also be available on the internet at www.valpo.edu/athletics. Tim Harwood will handle the play-by-play, with Andrew Stem providing color commentary.

FRESHMAN SCORE BIG FOR VALPO
The Crusaders freshmen class has tallied eight of Valpo's 19 goals this season. Emily King has three markers, Lorna Torrez has added a pair, while Allison Swanson, Ashley Shaneyfelt, and Kristi Dixon have each found the back of the net once.

MOORE NEARS END OF RECORD-SETTING CAREER
Senior Lori Moore has led the Brown and Gold's offense for most of the season and most of her career for that matter. She has tallied eight goals and two assists for 18 points this season. For her career, she is the school's all-time leader in goals scored (35), points (80), and match-winning goals (10). She also ranks second with ten career assists. Moore's 35 career tallies rank her second in Mid-Con history. She is four goals shy of Ashley McGhee's (Oakland) all-time conference mark. Her 80 points also rank second in Mid-Con history behind McGhee's 92.

SUPER SENIORS
Valpo's senior class has totaled 26 wins during their four-year career, most among any graduating class. Lori Moore, Cathy DeVito, Kathy Cooksey, and Sarah Wittrock are making their third Mid-Con Tournament appearance.

ABOUT OAKLAND (9-11, 3-2)
Valpo defeated Oakland for the first time in school history, 2-1, on Oct. 20 in Rochester, Mich. The win marked the Golden Grizzlies first-ever home Mid-Con loss. Debbie Cartmel leads Oakland with nine goals and 24 points, while Kristi Swaving has added eight goals and 21 points. Sarah Buckland has posted a 1.41 GAA and a .752 save percentage with four shutouts in goal for the Golden Grizzlies.

ABOUT ORAL ROBERTS (12-5, 5-0)
The tournament's number one seed handed Valpo its lone Mid-Con loss this season, 2-0, at Eastgate Field back on Oct. 13. The Golden Eagles have a 11 match unbeaten streak currently, going 10-0-1 during that span. Jessica Kellogg, the Mid-Con's leading scorer, has tallied 11 goals and seven assists for 29 points. Jodi Kirkhuff has added seven goals and 22 points. In goal, Kellie Fenton has posted a 0.98 goals against average, an .807 save percentage, and recorded five shutouts.

ABOUT SOUTHERN UTAH (2-16, 1-4)
Valpo downed the fourth seed, 1-0, at home on Oct. 11. The Thunderbirds enter the tournament having dropped eight of their last nine contests. Ilene Dixon is Southern Utah's top scorer with five goals, while Annie Payne has dished out five assists. Megan Flowers has posted a 2.56 GAA and a .763 save percentage between the pipes.
