Crusaders End Trip to Tennessee with 1-0 Setback at Austin Peay

In the midst of a four-match road trip, Valparaiso wrapped up the Tennessee swing on Sunday afternoon dropping a 1-0 match against Austin Peay at Morgan Brothers Field in Clarksville, Tenn.

“I thought our backline did a good job taking their personality players out of the game,” head coach John Marovich said.  “Unfortunately we didn’t have the right answers in our attacking third of the field.”

The two sides battled through a scoreless opening 45 minutes with Valpo holding a 4-3 edge in shot attempts.  Two of the Crusaders shots were on net, but Carley Newman turned them both aside while Valpo’s Kristen Manski (Saint Charles, Ill./North H.S.) made one stop in the opening stanza.

The Governors scored the match’s lone goal 4:45 out of the locker room as Andy Quiceno took Joceline Quiceno’s cross from the endline to the back post and found the back of the net.

Valpo was unable to find the equalizer the rest of the way, tallying just one shot attempt after intermission.  Austin Peay (8-2) had eight shots in the second half, three of which were saved by Manski, to finish with an 11-5 shot edge for the match over the Crusaders.  Valpo had its only two corner kick opportunities in the second half, while only surrendering one the entire night.

Valparaiso (4-3-2) will continue its road trip on Friday evening as the Crusaders head to Terre Haute, Ind. to battle Indiana State.  Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CDT.

Match Notes: This was the first meeting ever between the two schools … Janine Lytle (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster H.S.) was the only Crusader with more than one shot attempt, and both of hers were on goal … after Valpo heads to Indiana State on Friday, the remaining eight matches will all be Horizon League contests.
