Crusaders Fall at Home to Oakland

Lisa-Marie Woods scored twice and added an assist as Oakland handed Valparaiso its first Mid-Continent Conference loss on Friday afternoon, 3-0, at Eastgate Field.

Woods scored her first tally at 25:31, breaking a scoreless tie, after dribbling through defenders from midfield and scoring from 15 yards out. Four and a half minutes later, she sent a through ball to Marianne Samdel, who scored from 15 yards out to put the Golden Grizzlies up 2-0.

Woods added the final tally of the match at the 33:15 mark, scoring on a give-and-go with Beth Howson in the penalty area.

Oakland (8-3-1, 4-0 Mid-Con) outshot Valpo 14-11 for the match, 10-4 in the opening stanza, while holding a 7-2 advantage on goal for the contest.

Danielle Guerra (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) made three saves for the Brown and Gold, while Sarah Buckland made two stops for the Golden Grizzlies.

Emily King (Colona, Ill./United Township H.S.) led Valpo with five shot attempts in the match, but failed to put one on net.

Valparaiso (2-9, 1-1) will return to action on Sunday afternoon when the Crusaders host IPFW in a 1 p.m. match at Eastgate Field.
