Valparaiso Routs Cleveland State 6-1

Jen Bartels (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) tied a single-match school record with three assists and six different Crusaders scored as Valparaiso downed Cleveland State 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Eastgate Field.

The Crusaders set a new school mark with 34 shot attempts in the match, 19 of which were on goal in the victory. The six goals tied for the second most in school laurels.

Lindsay Holley (Waldorf, Md./Westlake H.S.) put Valpo in front at 19:12 taking a Kelly Faulkner (Plymouth, Minn./Maple Grove H.S.) cross at the far post and scoring from a yard out. Allison Swanson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) made it 2-0 at the 32:22 mark scoring unassisted on a breakaway at from the top of the box.

Amy Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Lakota West H.S., Ohio) added a third goal with 1:16 remaining in the opening half taking a Bartels cross from the left and scoring from ten yards out. Lorna Torrez (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center-Grimes H.S.) added the fourth goal just 3:38 out of intermission taking a Britta Zewers (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View H.S.) feed in the box and beating starting goalkeeper Allie Zajaros.

Jennifer Wegehaupt (Omaha, Neb./Burke H.S.) added her first collegiate goal at the 85:48 mark from 20 yards out as Bartels drew her second assist of the match. Just 2:32 later, Bartels found Brittany Derksen's (Chugiak, Alaska/Chugiak H.S.) head from a corner kick for the sixth goal of the match. The tally was also Derksen's first career marker.

Jennifer Wieand spoiled the shutout for the Crusaders with 1:16 remaining in the match scoring from ten yards out for the Vikings.

Cleveland State (0-10) managed just five shots for the match, forcing Danielle Guerra (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) to make two saves. Zajaros made eight stops in the first 60 minutes for the Vikings, while Ashley Kidwell made five more over the final third of the match.

Valparaiso (3-4-1) will look to ride the momentum of the victory into Friday's Mid-Con showdown with Centenary in Shreveport, La. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
