Valpo Ends Exhibition Play with 2-0 at DePauw

Valparaiso University's women's soccer team ended its 2004 exhibition season on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over DePauw in Greencastle, Ind.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Jen Bartels (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) put home a cross from Brittany Derksen (Chugiak, Alaska/Chugiak H.S.) in the 50th minute to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.

Valpo added an insurance goal in the 81st minute as Amy Miller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Lakota West H.S., Ohio) scored on a rebound off of an Emily King (Colona, Ill./United Township H.S.) header. Lindsay Holley (Waldorf, Md./Westlake H.S.) started the play on a corner kick.

Erin Murray (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley H.S.) and Danielle Guerra (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton H.S.) each saw a half of action in goal for the Brown and Gold to combine on the shutout. Valpo did not allow a goal in either exhibition contest.

Valpo finishes exhibition play with a 2-0 mark, and will open the regular season on Friday afternoon when the Crusaders travel to Normal, Ill. for a 4 p.m. contest against Illinois State.
