Nelson Sets School Record but Valpo Falls to Wisconsin-Green Bay

Britt Nelson (Cortland, N.Y./Homer H.S.) set a new school record in the 1,000 freestyle on Saturday afternoon, but Valparaiso dropped its first dual meet of the season 165-98 to Wisconsin-Green Bay at the Athletics-Recreation Center pool.

Nelson won the race, the day's second event, with a time of 10:39.16, 15 seconds in front of her nearest competitor. The junior's time bettered Julie Durkin's 1999 mark of 10:44.17.

Leah Schneider (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) also posted an event win for the Crusaders, turning in a time of 2:18.71 in the 200 butterfly. The junior's victory was Valpo's only other win on the afternoon.

Amanda Gregory (Carmel, Ind./Carmel H.S.) turned in a second place finish for the Brown and Gold in the 50 free with a time of 26.13 seconds. Gregory was also second in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:05.73.

Daniella Trombatore (Redding, Calif./Shasta H.S.) was runner-up in the 100 free with a time of 57.90 seconds, while Maggie Kroemer (Brown Deer, Ill./Milwaukee Lutheran H.S.) was second in the 500 free (5:28.21).

Valpo (2-1) will head to the Ball State Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Muncie, Ind. Friday's events begin at 5 p.m. CST with Saturday getting underway at 8 a.m. CST.
