Valpo Earns Third Place Finish at Mid-Con Championships

Valparaiso finished in third place at the Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships that concluded Saturday in Rochester, Mich.

The Crusaders moved up one position on the final day to finish with 529 points, 27 ahead of fourth place IUPUI. Oakland was crowned the meet champion with 996 points, followed by Western Illinois with 614 points. Centenary was fifth with 271 points.

Lauren Bambach (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman H.S.) and Katie Jajtner (Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington H.S.) started the Crusaders on the final day with seventh and eight place finishes respectively in the 200 backstroke. Bambach finished in 2:16.12, while Jajtner turned in a time of 2:18.13.

Valpo's top finish on Saturday came from Britt Nelson (Cortland, N.Y./Homer H.S.). The junior finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:12.48. Maggie Kroemer (Brown Deer, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran H.S.) also finished fifth in the event with a time of 5:22.74.

The Crusaders also turned in a strong showing in the 100 butterfly. Leah Schneider (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead H.S.) was third in the event with a time of 59.53 seconds, while Ashley Seale (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville H.S.) was fourth, touching the wall in 1:00.47.

Allison Clark (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood H.S.) finished fourth for the Brown and Gold in the 200 breaststroke. Clark touched the wall in 2:26.79. Schneider also earned a fourth in the 100 free with a time of 53.84 seconds, while Amanda Gregory (Carmel, Ind./Carmel H.S.) was seventh with a time of 55.11 seconds.

Clark finished fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.04, as the Crusaders had at least one finalist in every event.

Andi Ticknor (North Vernon, Ind./Jennings County H.S.) placed fourth in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 191.55.

Valpo closed the meet out with a runner-up finish in the 400 free relay as Gregory, Nelson, Clark, and Schneider turned in a time of 3:39.68.

The Crusaders will return to the pool on December 21 at 1 p.m. CST as they travel to Indianapolis to face IUPUI. Please note, this is a change from the originally scheduled meet on December 9.
