Crusaders Close Dual Season with Win over Western Illinois

Valparaiso closed the dual meet portion of the 2009-2010 season on Saturday afternoon and sent its seniors out on a high note with a convincing 137-87 victory over Western Illinois on Senior Day at the Athletics-Recreation Center pool.

The Brown and Gold won eight individual events on the afternoon, including two each by Kristy Shew (Terre Haute, Ind./North Vigo H.S.), Rachel Majercik (Schaumburg, Ill./Conant H.S.), and Amy Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect H.S.).

Shew, a senior, posted Valpo’s first triumph of the day in the 1000 freestyle by more than four seconds with a time of 11:23.15.  She also won the 500 free by more than eight seconds, touching the wall in the 500 free in 5:33.90.

Majercik turned in a season’s best time of 53.87 seconds in the 100 free to win by nearly three seconds.  The senior also won the 200 individual medley, turning in the seventh fastest time in school history with a time of 2:15.57, more than two seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

Andracki’s first win of the day came in the 100 butterfly, turning in a time of 1:02.49.  She also won the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:03.44.

Laura Rickey (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville H.S.) added a victory in the 200 freestyle by more than two seconds, posting a time of 2:02.97.  Shaunna Dangremond (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino H.S.) added a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.44.  The junior also finished runner-up in the 50 free with a time of 26.38 seconds, a season’s best.

Stephanie Ferschl (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago H.S.) tallied a pair of runner-up finishes for the Crusaders on the afternoon, the first in the 1000 free with a time of 11:27.60.  She also finished second in the 500 free, posting a mark of 5:42.25.

Valparaiso (1-7) will return to the water on February 24 for the start of the Horizon League Championships hosted by UIC in Chicago, Ill.  The meet runs through February 27.  The first night’s events for the women begin at 6 p.m.
