Valparaiso remained in seventh place in the standings follow the second day of the Horizon League Championships on Thursday at Busbey Natatorium in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Crusaders have tallied 77 points at the midway point in the meet and increased their advantage over eighth place Butler to 11 points as the Bulldogs have scored 66 points to date.  Green Bay leads the way with 321 points followed by Milwaukee (273.5) and Cleveland State (249.5).  Wright State is in fourth place (207) with UIC (162) and Youngstown State (127) in fifth and sixth place respectively.

Valpo placed two individuals in the B finals of the 200 individual medley.  Shaunna Dangremond (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino H.S.) qualified 14th  overall with a season’s best time of 2:10.60.  The senior improved her effort in the evening finals, moving into 13th place turning in a time of 2:11.41.

Teammate Natalie Jarrett (Lebanon, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) qualified 15th in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:11.34, the second best time in school history behind Dangremond’s school-record effort in 2009.  Jarrett then finished 16th in the finals with her night mark of 2:12.17.

Sarah Robertson (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville H.S.) did not qualify for the finals, but posted a career best time of 2:19.59 in the 200 IM.

Valpo also scored points in the 200 medley relay Thursday evening, finishing in seventh place.  The team of Jarrett, Amy Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect H.S.), Dangremond, and Laura Rickey (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville H.S.) touched the wall in 4:00.01, the second fastest mark in school history.

The Crusaders did not qualify any swimmers for the finals of the 500 freestyle.  Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West H.S.) led the way for the Brown and Gold with a collegiate best time of 5:20.97 to finish 22nd while Alizabeth Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University H.S.) was one spot behind her.  Stephanie Ferschl (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago H.S.) added a season’s best mark of 5:28.10 in the event as did Justine Barnes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams H.S.) with a time of 5:38.79.  Katie Meunier (Mukwanago, Wis./Mukwanago H.S.) added a career best mark of 6:02.22.

The other individual event held on Thursday was the 50 freestyle, where Brittany Bencur (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) led the way for Valpo with a career best time of 26.59 seconds to finish 21st overall.  Barnes also participated in the morning, turning in a career best time of 26.36 seconds in an exhibition swim.

Valparaiso will return to action for the third day of competition on Friday.  Prelims start at 9 a.m. CST with the evening finals commencing at 4:30 p.m. CST.
