Valpo Women Swim at Butler to Open Season Sunday

Valparaiso began a new season of women’s swimming on Sunday afternoon, falling to four other schools in a meet hosted by Butler in Fishers, Ind.

The Crusaders lost to the host Bulldogs 121-78, fell to Saint Louis 178-54, dropped a 192-40 decision to Evansville and suffered a 171-54 setback to Wright State.

Freshman Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan H.S.) started her career off in style with a runner-up finish in the 1000 freestyle, posting a time of 10:49.07, the fifth best time in school history.  Segatto also finished third in the 500 free with a mark of 5:16.41, the eighth best effort all-time at Valpo.

Natalie Jarrett (Lebanon, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) added a sixth place effort for the Crusaders in the 200 individual medley with her time of 2:16.28.  Jarrett also placed ninth in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 2:16.48.

Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West H.S.) added the team’s best mark in the 200 free with a time of 2:06.28 while Brittany Bencur (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) turned in a time of 27.66 seconds in the 50 free to pace the Brown and Gold.

In the 200 butterfly, Justine Barnes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams H.S.) touched the wall in 2:23.50 for Valpo’s fastest finish while Alizabeth Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University H.S.) added a mark of 58.78 seconds in the 100 free.

Freshman Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine H.S.) paced the Brown and Gold in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:40.95 in her collegiate debut.

Valparaiso (0-4) will return to the water on Oct. 14 at the Dennis Stark Relays.  The first event begins at 4 p.m. CDT in Notre Dame, Ind.
