Valpo Women Finish Sixth at Coers Invite

Valparaiso’s women’s swim team wrapped up the two-day Coers Invitational with a sixth place finish on Saturday afternoon at the Lewellan Aquatic Center in Muncie, Ind.

The Crusaders scored 110 points over the two days of competition.  Host Ball State won the meet with 734 points, followed by Marshall (550), Grand Valley State (399), and Findlay (185).  Lewis was fifth with 125 points, just 15 ahead of the Brown and Gold.

Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan H.S.) earned the day’s top finish for Valpo, finishing seventh in the mile.  The freshman turned in a time of 18:21.83, the sixth best mark in school history.  She also had the team’s top mark in the 200 butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:15.57.

Natalie Jarrett (Lebanon, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) added another top-10 finish for the Crusaders, finishing ninth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.10.  She also posted the top 200 back time of the day for the team, placing 11th with a time of 2:16.73.

Lauren Knop (Geneva, Ill./Geneva H.S.) placed 14th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.93.  She also had the school’s best 100 free time, touching the wall in 58.16 seconds.

Alex Caruthers (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard H.S.) added a 14th place effort in the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 2:41. 54.

Justine Barnes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams H.S.) posted the best time in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 1:05.24 while Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West H.S.) added the team’s best effort in the 200 freestyle with her time of 2:08.57.

Valpo finished the meet with a fifth place effort in the 400 freestyle relay.  The team of Ali Taubert (Bloomington, Ill./University H.S.), Segatto, Knop, and Jarrett turned in a time of 3:52.23.  The 800 free relay team of Taubert, Caruthers, Bretl, and Segatto finished sixth with a time of 8:28.28.  The Crusaders also opened the day with a sixth place finish in the 200 medley relay.  The team of Knop, Jarrett, Segatto, and Brittany Bencur (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) posted a time of 1:58.54.

Valparaiso will return to the water Dec. 1-3 at the Calvin Invitational.  The three-day meet in Grand Rapids, Mich. begins at 5 p.m. CST on Thursday night.
