The Valparaiso women's swimming squad got event victories from Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) and Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan) as it competed at Lewis Saturday afternoon, a matchup which Lewis won 162-91.
Bretl took top honors in the 1000 free with a time of 11:20.13, while Segatto captured the win in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 2:14.73. Both swimmers also had a second-place finish as well – Bretl in the 500 free (5:29.76) and Segatto in the 200 backstroke (2:16.78).
A pair of Crusaders also picked up second-place finishes against the Flyers. Sophomore Alex Caruthers (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard) took second place behind her teammate in the 1000 free with a time of 11:38.67, while fellow sophomore Lauren Knop (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) came home second in 1:04.21 in the 100 backstroke. Valpo’s 400 free relay team of Bretl, Knop, and freshmen Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) and Ciara Lightner (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) took second place in its event, posting a time of 3:50.60.
Valparaiso returns to the pool at the two-day Woehnker Invitational next weekend. The meet runs Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17, in Crawfordsville, Ind.
