Gomez Barrientos Swims into Record Books Again at Indiana Intercollegiate

The Valparaiso men’s and women’s swimming teams traveled to West Lafayette, Ind. today for the Indiana Intercollegiate hosted by Purdue University.

Freshman Dani Gomez Barrientos (Mexico City, Mexico/Grandview Prep.) continued to put her name in the record books in just her second collegiate meet. With a sixth place finish in the women’s 200 yard IM with a 2:11.25, she set the second-best time in Valpo history. She also finished seventh in the 500 yard freestyle with a 5:09.79, the fourth-best time at Valpo.

The men’s 200 yard medley team of freshman Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep.), junior Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), junior Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) and senior Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West) finished fourth with a time of 1:36.83. Their time was good for seventh-best all time.

The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Penn, Braun, senior Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton), and junior Tim Mitchell (Lakeville, Minn./) finished in 8th place with a 1:29.88, just outside the top-ten times in Crusader history.

Jenny also finished ninth in the men’s 100 yard breaststroke with a 59.12 and 16th in the 50 yard freestyle with a 22.33. Braun finished three spots ahead of Jenny with a 21.96.

Castro Diaz finished 14th in the 200 yard IM with a 2:01.60 and 17th in the 100 yard butterfly with a 53.73. Penn would finish in 15th in the 100 yard backstroke with a 55.72, just a second out of the top-ten Valpo times. King finished just behind Penn in 56.10.

Junior Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) swam a 56.60 in the women’s 100 yard freestyle to finish 17th.

Sophomore Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) placed 16th in the 500 yard freestyle with a 5:27.67. Senior Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) finished the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.14 to finish in 16th place.

The men finished in 8th place with 78 points while the women earned 49 points to finish in 9th place.

Both teams return to the pool next Saturday when they travel to Cleveland State. The women will also take on Youngstown State at the meet. Start time is set for 12:00 pm CT.
