Crusaders Drop Dual Meets At Cleveland State

The Valparaiso men’s and women’s swimming teams traveled to Cleveland State for a Saturday afternoon meet. The men fell to the Vikings, while the women finished behind Youngstown State and the hosts.

Junior Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) led the way for the men with a pair of victories and a runner-up finish. He swept the men’s 100 (52.05) and 200 yard butterfly (1:54.63) while posting a 4:12.15 in the 400 yard IM to finish second. He broke his personal best in the 200 butterfly by nearly three-quarters of a second, good for second-best all-time at Valpo. He also helped the 400 yard medley relay team to a third place finish in 3:34.44, the eight-best time in program history.

Freshman Dani Gomez Barrientos (Mexico City, Mexico/Grandview Prep) posted three top-three performances as well. She took second in the women’s 1000 yard freestyle (10:42.05) and 400 yard IM (4:40.17), while finishing third in the 200 yard backstroke (2:15.57). Her times were good for second-best all-time in the 400 IM and fourth-best in the 1000. She was also on the third-place squad in the 400 yard medley relay (4:08.56).

Sophomore Ethan Leach (Yorktow, Ind./Burris Laboratory) had two top-three finishes as he claimed third in the 1,000 yard freestyle (10:44.95) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:12.40). He also finished sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke with a 1:00.75, just outside the top-ten in school history.

Sophomore Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) finished fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:12.41 and sixth in the 100 yard freestyle in 56.23. Senior Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) claimed third place in the 200 yard butterfly (2:11.40) and 500 yard freestyle (5:16.23).

Senior Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West) finished second in the 100 yard freestyle (48.89) and third in the 50 yard freestyle (21.96), while anchoring the 400 yard medley relay-team. Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) who swam the starting lap for the record-breaking relay team, finished second in the 200 backstroke with a 2:05.27.

Valpo returns to the pool on Friday, Nov. 7 when they travel to Romeoville, Ill. to Lewis University in a dual meet. Start time is set for 3:00 pm CT.
