Crusaders Rewrite Record Books Again at HL Championships

The Valparaiso swimming teams saw three more school records fall on Thursday on day two at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships in Milwaukee, Wis. The men sit at seventh place with 49 points, while the women have 85 points and remain in eighth place.

Senior Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) finished 11th in the women’s 500 yard freestyle final and bettered her school record in the event by almost two seconds as she touched the wall in 5:02.90. Classmate Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) finished three spots behind her in 5:04.93, the second best mark in Valpo history.

In the men’s 50 yard freestyle final, senior Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West) finished in 21.14 to claim 16th. He finished in 21.06 in the prelims to set the third fastest time at Valpo.

The women’s 400 yard medley relay team of Segatto, Cannon, Dani Gomez Barrientos (Mexico City, Mexico/Grandview Prep. [Fla.]) and Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) set the school record with their time of 3:57.05, almost three-quarters of a second quicker than the previous mark.

Gomez Barrientos bettered her program record in the women’s 200 yard IM in the prelims on Thursday afternoon with a time of 2:08.81,.four hundredths of a second quicker than her previous time.

Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) improved his second fastest time in the men’s 200 yard IM prelims by over a second, touching the wall in 1:53.94.

The Crusaders return to action on Friday at the Horizon League Championships. Prelims being at 10:30 am CT with finals starting at 7:00 pm. Links to live streaming and live results will be available at ValpoAthletics.com.
