Valpo Downs Oakland to Move to 3-1 in Mid-Con

The Valparaiso women's tennis team won its third straight match late on Saturday, defeating Oakland 6-0 in Rochester, Mich.

The Crusaders won all six singles matches so the doubles contests were not conducted.

Mara Sonkin (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South H.S.) was a 6-1, 6-0 victory at first singles, while Monika Danko (Northfield, Ill./New Trier H.S.) and Patricia Arakaki (Campo Grande, Brazil/LaPorte H.S., Ind.) each cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins at second and fifth singles respectively. Christina Scala (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H.S.) won 6-0, 6-1 at the third spot, while Charmane Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) posted a 6-4, 6-0 win at sixth singles. Jill Dierberg (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.) won by default as her opponent pulled out of the match with an injury.

Valpo (5-6, 3-1 Mid-Con) will return to action next weekend with their final conference cluster of the season in Macomb, Ill. The Crusaders will face Southern Utah at 9 a.m. on Friday and Chicago State at 1 p.m. later that day.
