Valparaiso headed to Detroit, Mich. on Monday for a pair of dual matches, dropping a 5-2 decision to Oakland in the morning and a 6-1 contest at Wayne State in the afternoon.

The Crusaders posted a pair of victories in the morning against the Golden Grizzlies at the top two singles spots in the order.  Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lisa Lulgjuraj at number one singles while Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) was a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victor at the second spot.

Oakland took the four other singles points though, in addition to doubles, where the hosts swept all three matches.

In the afternoon, Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) earned Valpo’s lone win, a three-set thriller, winning in a tie-break in the third set.  The junior defeated Meghan Luzod 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 at third singles.

Wayne State won the other five singles matches as well as all three doubles contests.

“We played much better today than we did over the weekend,” head coach Jay Adams said.  “The more matches we get under our belt the better we will become.”

Valparaiso will wrap up its fall season October 26-28 in Chicago, Ill. at the Chicago State Tournament.
