Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) posted her first victory of the spring on Friday afternoon but it was not enough for the Crusaders as Valparaiso dropped a 6-1 decision to Ball State in Muncie, Ind.
Sajevic earned a straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Haly Calderwood at second singles for Valpo’s lone point of the afternoon.
Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) nearly earned a win for the Brown and Gold at the number one spot before falling to Sophie Quist in a super tie-break 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.
Ball State (3-2) recorded straight sets victories at the other four spots. Jennifer Pollack defeated Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) 6-1, 6-2 at the third spot while Emma Retter downed Lindsey Gustafson (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) 6-2, 6-3 at fourth singles. Georgina Thomson was a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) while Katherine Rist topped Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) 6-0, 6-0 at the bottom of the order.
In doubles play, the Cardinals took all three matches. Calderwood and Pollack defeated Schwartz and Keifer 8-1 at number one doubles while Thomson and Quist were 8-3 victors against Sajevic and Wingstrom. Hayley Hall and Retter topped Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) and Gustafson 8-0 at the third spot.
Valparaiso (0-2) will look to rebound on Saturday evening as the Crusaders host Bradley at Matchpoint in Griffith, Ind. beginning at 5 p.m.
